Safety Web offers your internet safety facts so you can learn about cyber bullying.

Guidelines to Chatting Safe

It is easy to remain anonymous on the web and this can encourage some people to make up things about themselves, even passing off someone else's face as their own. Sometimes people will give a false impression of themselves, either by exaggerating the truth or lying. A lot of the time you will instinctively know what another person is saying is odd or not quite right. This is your instinct, which acts as a self-defence, telling you something is wrong. It is important to trust these instincts and let your parent or carer know when you think something is wrong.

  • This instinct works best when you can see or hear a person, but obviously when talking to someone on the web it is not possible to do this so it is important to be even more alert.

  • Don't give out personal details, photographs, or any other information that could be used to identify you, such as information about your family, where you live or the school you go to.

  • Don't take other people at face value - they may not be what they seem.

  • Never arrange to meet someone you've only ever previously met on the Internet without first telling your parents, getting their permission and taking a responsible adult with you. The first meeting should always be in a public place.

  • Don't open an attachment or download a file unless you know and trust the person who has sent it.

  • Never respond directly to anything you find disturbing - save or print it, log off and tell an adult.

  • I'm smart enough to know when someone's pulling my leg - surely I'm not at risk? The people who abuse chatrooms can be quite convincing, tricking adults as well as teenagers. Without seeing a person we can never be sure they are what they say they are. This is why you should never arrange to meet someone you have chatted to on the internet without telling your parents, getting their permission and taking a responsible adult with you. Even then, your first meeting should always be in a public place.

    Info on Our Chatrooms
Our chatrooms have been designed to the specifications suggested in the ChatDanger.com's 'Safe Chatroom Setup' page

The chatrooms are fitted with a 'Contact Moderator' button, the result of clicking this will take you to a chatroom which deals with chatroom complaints. Our chatroom application allows you to copy and paste text within the chat. If you can, click on the text you want to copy, right click then hit 'Copy Text' then paste it in the help chatroom, a moderator might not always be on hand to deal with the complaint but it will be looked into at a later date. There is also an complaint email form on the website where you can submit complaints.

If the complaint is valid and it proves to not be a hoax, depending on the offenses committed will determind how the user is dealt with

Offensive text, indecent conversations, persistant swearing and racial discriminative comments will result in the user being banned from the website for a minimum of 3 days depending on the logs we retrive of the reported conversations will determind how long the ban is

Adults posing as minors, Trying to arrange meeting someone, Paedophile related activity will result in a permanent ban and the logs of the offense commited sent directly to your ISP (internet service provider) and the police, It's then a matter for the authorities to deal with.

If a moderator catches you giving out personal information such as your phone number, address or anything that identifies you as an individual, you will be banned

What will happen after after you've made a complaint?
On signing into our chat, the server extracts information that can identify you as an individual, this is the case for everyone and this is how we can report violators of our services to the authorities if needed to.

Should i click links posted in the chatrooms?
NEVER under any circumstances click external links from the chatsite displayed in the chatroom even it's from a trusted source, even if it sounds great and something you could be really interested in like a new chat site or someones pics the chances are it's not that at all, some people make a living from doing this, getting people to click there links then taking control of there computers and extracting valuable information for credit cards, paypal account and more valuable services.

    Viewing other members pics
You don't have to download things to get a virus, just opening a webpage can expose your computer to harmful things. If someone you don't know is trying to show you pics on a website, unless it's a trusted source like myspace or faceparty, don't click the link. We also have a file send feature on the site, never accept a file from an un trusted source.

We aren't trying to take all the fun out of chatting, i know it's fun to exchange pics and talk to new people and in some cases even meet people you regularly chat to and consider as friend, but the dangers are very real.
